GLP’s Community of Practice, the Certified Network, is dedicated to advancing adult learning. Many of us are seeing conversations emerge about the role of or avoidance of artificial intelligence (AI). From design and facilitation to evaluation and learner engagement, the use of AI is already beginning to shape decisions we make about how we work, teach, learn, and collaborate. For some, it may be an uncomfortable conversation, yet it is so important.
At two of our recent quarterly gatherings, we invited intentional conversation around the use of AI – how it may be showing up in our work right now, opportunities for responsible use, as well as questions and cautions we should have. We are delighted to share short recordings from two members of the network for your exploration in how AI might impact your own practice.
Phil Silva (CDET) shared that “every question you ask a Generative AI poses real and measurable impacts out in the world.” He also notes that the opportunity of Generative AI is that it allows us to work at “bigger scales and with short time frames that we have not been able to up to now.”
Watch the video below for resources on the challenges AI brings to the environment, cognition and critical thinking, mental health and social cohesion, and economic opportunity. Also highlighted are 6 opportunities for powerful use for the adult learning world such as chunking and summarizing information, translation, and adapting to cultural context.
Jen VanDragt (CDEP) shares that “each AI use must matter” and how her philosophy of finite and wise use to protect the environment requires intentional preparation to develop particularly solid AI prompts. Watch the video below to see her 4 case studies on “responsible AI deployment” in adult learning needs assessment, the 4A sequence of learning tasks, asynchronous learning, and organizing (not interpreting) evaluation feedback.
