How Might AI Inform or Endanger Our Work … and Our World
GLP’s Community of Practice, the Certified Network, is dedicated to advancing adult learning. Many of us are seeing conversations emerge about the role of or avoidance of artificial intelligence (AI). From design and facilitation to evaluation and learner engagement, the use of AI is already beginning to shape decisions we make about how we work, teach, learn, and collaborate. For some, it may be an uncomfortable conversation and yet important.
A Word or Two about Tape
You may think there is not much to say about tape, but I beg to differ. In fact, over the years I have learned and experimented a great deal with this lovely office supply. In fact, when Covid took hold of the world and pushed most of us online, one thing I really missed was my roll of tape!
Freedom Paves the Way to Learning
A learner had a strikingly negative reaction when I referenced university lectures while facilitating on the concept of “teaching-centered versus learning-centered. I remarked that there is a place on the continuum for everything, and that I have also experienced many excellent lectures.
Plain Language is Universal Design: 5 Tips
Plain Language – its very name doesn’t make for an exciting introduction! So, I’ll tell you how I got started as a avid proponent. After the human-caused flooding from Hurricane Katrina in southern Louisiana in 2005, I got connected with “The Road Home” program that was giving money to homeowners who lost everything in the floods. They believed low literacy was causing people to misunderstand the funding application and to return confused for added appointments.
That’s Just Good Teaching
Village of Wisdom (VOW) in Durham, NC has been a champion of social-emotional learning (SEL) of Black students in the K-12 system since 2014. They leverage the cultural strengths of Black families and parents to collaboratively design and create culturally affirming learning environments (CALES), so that children of color are successful in the classroom.
Inviting Inner Wisdom
Learning is not only about the mind. Our bodies often carry what our minds cannot immediately recall. A shift in posture, a deep breath, or the way we hold our hands can awaken memory, quiet distraction, and create space for reflection.

Is Dialogue Education Culture Specific?
Can Dialogue Education work in non-Western cultures? I’m not sure how well it would work in my learning context.”
This question comes up often when I present the principles of Dialogue Education to people engaged in multi-cultural organizations and communities. Most recently, a gentleman from India voiced strong doubts regarding its use in his community of learners.
Teaching in Today’s Global Context
The International Baptist Theological Study Centre (IBTS) has been on a learning journey to strengthen its capacity in learning design and facilitation through a learning-centred approach. Committed to excellence in teaching and formation, IBTS seeks to maximize the potential of every student who engages in its programmes. Through the IBTS Learning Network, a community of scholars, educators, and practitioners across Europe and beyond, we are fostering partnerships and sharing resources to strengthen theological education more widely.
Humanizing Incarcerated Co-learners with Dialogue Education
I have the privilege of meeting almost weekly with incarcerated persons for one and a half hours as an Alpha facilitator. Alpha is a faith-based course that is approved by the local jail in my county in Northern Wisconsin. Each session, as described by the organization, is “a space for honest and open conversations about life’s biggest questions.”
Facilitators Get Nervous Too!
egardless of how many years you have been facilitating or leading groups, getting nervous is normal. In fact, it is helpful. Being a little nervous keeps us sharp and focused, has us check our assumptions, and ensures we don’t take too much for granted. However, there is such a thing as being too nervous – where our ability to perform well is hindered.
