Building the Capacity of Radio Broadcasters and Partners in Africa

THE SITUATION

A decade ago, Farm Radio International (FRI) asked GLP to support them in the development of a new learning program for staff and volunteers of 25 radio stations across Africa. The aim was to expand and strengthen broadcasts on agriculture and food security issues.

THE JOURNEY

Based on the success, we collaborated with e-learning specialists to link face-to-face learning with distance learning. More recently, FRI invited GLP to support them, and partners in 3 African nations, to use the wisdoms of social and behavior change (SBCC) to reduce post-harvest loss. GLP’s role focused on distilling the core concepts of SBCC and creating a unified framework for each organization to craft their own SBCC strategy. We also supported the design of an in-person workshop for high-level leaders of partner organizations in various countries and collaborated with a team to design a prototype workshop to be used on the national level.

THE IMPACT

With GLP’s support, FRI designed an intensive learning program that united the voices of media, radio, leaders, and community members and focused their collective attention on critical issues of post-harvest loss. Together, they produced engaging radio episodes built to call attention to promising practices for local farmers – as well as for their families and communities.
